TCM Herbal Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formulas have been in practice for thousands of years. Plants and animal products have been used to help alleviate and treat a lot of illnesses long before we were able to isolate and extract the key ingredient(s) or use chemistry to create pharmaceutical drugs.

You can find a lot of over the counter herbal supplements. Turmeric used for circulation and pain management. Red yeast rice used to help with cholesterol management. Chamomile used to soothe and ease stress. These single herbs are seen and used in TCM.

In TCM herbal medicine, the formulas we curate are composed of various single herbs based on the properties that were studied by the TCM practitioners many many moons ago. There are over 300 single herbs and over 200 traditional classic herbal formulas. Modifications to these formulas are recommended and performed to target the patient’s constitution (weight, age, gender, and overall vitality).

Modern science has provided us the tools and resources to identify how herbs can be used and abused. Examples would be the use of artemisia annua, qing hao, as a treatment for malaria. This discovery led to the Nobel Peace Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2015 for Tu Youyou. This herb was utilized as the frontline anti-malarial chemotherapies in replacement of quinine and other quinoline anti-malarials.

An example of TCM herbal medicine abuse is seen with the use of ma huang or ephedra and its application in sports performance and weight loss. In 2003, the FDA has banned the use of ephedra. This was the first time an herbal supplement has been banned.

I am confident researchers will continue to make new discoveries to explain the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of TCM formulas.

Present time, COVID 19, has infected and killed many people. The good news is that many healthy individuals can fight off the virus. Our immune system will naturally create antibodies against any pathogen. The more robust we are the more likely we will heal, naturally.

Currently, in China, more than 80% of patients are utilizing TCM herbal medicine. There are different formulas used at every stage and every formula can be tweaked and customized to fit the patient’s needs accordingly. At this time TCM herbal medicine is best used for patients who are asymptomatic or in the early stages of infection. This includes healthy individuals who may experiencing some of the mild symptoms of a fever, cough, and shortness of breath.

These symptoms can also be seen in the flu and common cold. Therefore, the CDC has advised to have you tested, quarantined, and rest. Staying at home is an option for individuals who are not at risk of developing complications.
